It抯 more than dirt. The mixture of gravel and nutrient-rich organic material being spread at the construction site of the 9/11 Memorial is the thoroughly-planned? foundation for more than 400 trees.

The so-called structural soil has two functions. The gravel helps create space for oxygen and water to reach tree roots, while providing enough stability to handle the plaza it will support. The organic material provides the nutrients to help the trees grow and remain healthy. Worm skin and excrement is part of the organic material combined with the gravel.

The first director of the World Trade Center and the man behind the twin towers’ original construction recalled picking the architect for what were once the world’s tallest buildings and his ongoing relationship with the Frenchman who walked a high wire strung between the two skyscrapers.

The WTC’s first director, Guy Tozzoli, chatted Monday with museum staff of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. He was hired in 1962 by then-named Port Authority of New York to head the development, construction and management of the World Trade Center, a complex aimed to revitalize lower Manhattan.? He was responsible for the entire project and chose architect Minoru Yamasaki.

Joining Greenberg on the panel are Dennis Farrell and New York State Supreme Court Judge Edward McCarty.

Farrell, whose firefighter brother died on 9/11, is a nationally recognized security expert with more than three decades of law enforcement experience. McCarty is a military tribunals aficionado. The judge, who is a retired colonel from the U.S. Army’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps, presides in Nassau County, where he’s a special law professor at Hofstra University.

The terror-trial panel includes noted author Karen Greenberg, who is the executive director of NYU抯 Center on Law and Security. Greenberg has studied data on trials of? terror suspects since 9/11.? Joining Greenberg on the panel are Dennis Farrell and New York State Supreme Court Judge Edward McCarty.

Farrell, whose firefighter brother died on 9/11, is a nationally recognized security expert with more than three decades of law enforcement experience. McCarty is a military tribunals aficionado. The judge, who is a retired colonel from the U.S. Army抯 Judge Advocate General抯 Corps, presides in Nassau County, where he抯 a special law professor at Hofstra University.

It抯 more than dirt. The mixture of gravel and nutrient-rich organic material being spread at the construction site of the 9/11 Memorial is the thoroughly-planned? foundation for more than 400 trees.

The so-called structural soil has two functions. The gravel helps create space for oxygen and water to reach tree roots, while providing enough stability to handle the plaza it will support. The organic material provides the nutrients to help the trees grow and remain healthy. Worm skin and excrement is part of the organic material combined with the gravel.

Currently, the soil is being spread on a nearly 13,000-square-foot area on the plaza, enough space to support up to 18 of the memorial trees, according to Gareth Eckmann, director of construction for the 9/11 Memorial.

The WTC抯 first director, Guy Tozzoli, chatted Monday with museum staff of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. He was hired in 1962 by then-named Port Authority of New York to head the development, construction and management of the World Trade Center, a complex aimed to revitalize lower Manhattan.? Until the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum opens, it抯 the official location for visitor across the globe to peek into the future and see what the Memorial & Museum will look like once completed.? The Memorial opens in 2011, the Museum is to follow about a year later.

The Preview Site sees nearly 3,000 visitors per day. Inside there are renderings and architecture models of the soon-to-be completed Memorial, some artifacts and interactive kiosks. Visitors can also peek down into the construction site at World Trade Center and view the ongoing progress of the 9/11 Memorial using EarthCam抯 live Webcam.
